Our Crime Prevention Academy focuses on free education for the citizens of our community so they can better protect themselves and avoid becoming victims of crime. Addressing the needs of children and juveniles and convincing them not to become involved in illegal activities is paramount.

Safe Surfing On The Internet

Do you know what your children do when they're online? Children are especially vulnerable to undesirable content or situations on the Internet. The key to promoting your children's safety online is to educate yourself and your children. There are things you can do to help your children enjoy all the benefits of the Internet without falling prey to the risks. The CFTEF is proud to offer educational programs for children and parents on how to surf the Internet safely.

Sexual Assault Prevention

Have you ever been the victim of a sexual assault such as rape, date rape, inappropriate touching, obscene exposure or verbal assault? All are examples of sexual assaults. These are crimes of opportunity. You can eliminate the opportunity; and you can decrease your chances of being a victim by recognizing potentially dangerous situations. This program will give you many tips on how to stay safe from sexual assaults and defend yourself if you must.

Lost but Found Safe and Sound

This program is designed to show children ages 4-12 what to do if they become lost in remote areas such as parks or forests. This program includes a professionally produced video where a 7 year-old child tells a story about being separated from her parent while hiking. The video has won many film awards. We also address children becoming lost in urban environments i.e. shopping centers, stores, amusement parks.

Eddie Eagle

The NRA's Eddie Eagle GunSafeŽ Program teaches children in pre-K through the third grade that, if they find a gun, they should: "STOP! Don't Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult." Through a fast-paced animated video and fun-filled activity books, the program's mascot, Eddie Eagle, teaches his younger friends to repeat and follow his simple safety message. The Eddie Eagle GunSafeŽ Program includes a brochure entitled "A Parent's Guide to Gun Safety," which helps parents understand their responsibilities including the key message: "Store your guns so they are inaccessible to unauthorized users, especially children." This program is formally endorsed by the National Sheriffs' Association and is invaluable information for you and your children.

Teen Suicide Prevention:

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents ages 15-19 in the United States. Are you familiar with the warning signs? What would you do to help someone? What local agencies are there to assist someone contemplating suicide. What are some suicide myths and facts? If you don't know all of the answers to these questions, allow us to help you to become better acquainted with ways to prevent teen suicide.

Class Action

Class Action is a law-related education program designed to enhance the partnership among law enforcement, students, and the community. Class Action teaches not only the specifics of our rights, but also the limits to behavior as a citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Students will come to understand their relationship to the law and importance of personal responsibility in our society.

Identity Theft Prevention

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. It's actually very easy to steal someone's identity. All a criminal needs is your name, address, date of birth, social security number. Once a thief has this information they can ruin your credit, drain your bank account, which basically destroys your financial reputation. This program will help you to learn the basic steps needed to ensure that you would not become the next victim of identity theft.

CPR Training

According to the American Heart Association each year over 250,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest in the United States, that's over 680 people each day. This is by far the number one cause of death in the U.S. and in our own community. Would you know what to do if a friend or family member suffered a sudden cardiac arrest? The CPTEF recognizes learning CPR and the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) are critical links in the Chain of Survival when a cardiac emergency occurs. The Albemarle County Sheriff's Office deputies and the CPTEF Safety and Security Division deputies are trained in CPR and use of an AED and would like to teach you these life-saving skills. Our instructors are American Heart Association certified and can provide this service to you and your family. Classes are also available in Spanish.
